- Like many people in life and in fiction, both main characters have traumatic childhoods (neither experienced physical or sexual abuse). The trauma was situational, but significant to their personalities.
- One main character witnessed a tragic loss of a sibling as a child. The accidental death occurs off page, however, there is a police report included in the story that paints the picture of what occurred. The characters also discuss this at a different point in the story.
- The other main character was adopted as a four-year old and separated from his twin (against his will, to the extent a child of that age can consent).
- The story has scenes set inside a casino with references to gambling, and includes a recovering gambling addict.
- There is one scene with consensual THC consumption.
- This story contains multiple consensual sexual encounters between the main characters.
- No cheating or “other love interest” drama.
- This is a romantic suspense story with a crime plot line. An FBI agent is investigating a string of violent crimes. This means, you’ll see references to physical assaults, home invasions, murder, abduction, etc. In short, bad people do bad things with weapons, but the good people win in the end. (That’s not really a spoiler, right? It’s a romance story with a happy ending, for shit’s sake).
- I don’t (personally) consider this last one as a trigger, but I’m told some people like to know about this when going into a story. So… here it is: The female main character is plus sized and struggles with her body image. She reflects on childhood teasing. The story also includes another instance when a random jerkwad makes a dig at her weight (the hero handles this, naturally). The hero makes it his mission to erase all her insecurities, but she has to do the work on her own too. Some of this is based on my personal experience and feelings about my body. As such, please don’t come at me for writing cliche references to “big girls who don’t love themselves” because not everyone is at that point yet. Okay. Off the soapbox now. I hope you find Lila to be a real reflection of the experience of some plus sized women.

As far as assaults go, it’s a relatively tame attempt (not very violent). Since this is a RomCom, I tried to keep it light and not too upsetting.

One main character has a stalker, and there is a recounting of a past traumatic event with attempted sexual assault (more detail on this is contained in the collapsible box below since it is a more significant spoiler). Some minor physical violence (not between the main characters). Additionally, this book contains some good old profanity, adult situations, consensual sexually explicit scenes (including some light spanking). There’s also some weird-yet-oddly-hot food sex. Oh, and there’s a man bun, which isn’t offensive to the author but highly offensive to the main character. She also says “fuck” alot.

In this book, the main female character is a victim of past attempted sexual assault (with limited asphyxiation) that occurs after a consensual sexual encounter when she is intoxicated (the perpetrator is NOT the main male character). The perpetrator does not succeed in sexually assaulting her, but he is physically violent with her during the attempt. So I’d classify this as a physical assault and attempted sexual assault. The actual event occurs completely off-page; however, she does eventually explain the event to the hero in moderate detail. Additionally, she is being stalked and has PTSD from the event, which includes a panic attack and a later PTSD black-out.
If this content is especially bothersome to you, you may wish to skip over the description of the event, which begins in the second half of chapter forty-one and the beginning of chapter forty-two.
Since this is a romcom, I’ve tried my best to keep this content as respectful as possible and not “dwell” on it. However, it’s important to this characters’ healing arc, and therefore, I kept the recounting of the event on-page to stay true to the story and the impact it had on her personality/emotions during the book.
